How to Choose a Wedding Cake – Style and Flavour

If you’re planning a wedding, one of the many decisions that you’ll need to make will be the type of wedding cake that you want. The wedding cake is the centrepiece of any wedding reception, so it’s important to choose one that suits the style of your wedding and that tastes great. Although some couples choose to make their own wedding cakes, this can be time-consuming and unless you are experienced at baking and decorating cakes, it’s usually best to have your wedding cake made for you by a wedding cake designer, so that it will have a professional look.

There are many different types of wedding cake that you can choose from. Here are some things to think about when making your decision.

Style of Wedding Cake

Most professional wedding cake designers will offer a wide range of different styles of cake for you to choose from. Popular wedding cake styles include traditional tiered wedding cakes, individual wedding cakes and contemporary, fun wedding cakes. Your choice of wedding cake will largely depend on the style of wedding and wedding reception that you are planning.

If you are planning a traditional wedding, you may want to choose a traditional wedding cake. Traditional wedding cakes are usually tiered, Royal or Regal iced rich fruit cakes. If you are planning on a traditional “cutting of the cake” ceremony at your wedding reception, a traditional wedding cake may be the best choice for you. However, you will still be able to choose from a range of shapes, designs and colour schemes in order to make your wedding cake stand out. Rather than creating the cake by using a series of round cakes, for example, you could choose to use square cakes, diamond-shaped cakes or even heart-shaped cakes. You may choose to have your wedding cake decorated using sugar-flowers which match your bouquet and other flower arrangements used in your wedding, or use more unusual and contemporary-looking decorations.

Individual wedding cakes are a popular and stylish alternative to the traditional wedding cake. These consist of a number of cupcakes which are arranged on a board or a Perspex cake stand. You can choose from a range of different styles and colours and, if you still want to have a traditional “cutting of the cake” ceremony, you can choose to have a top tier consisting of a larger cake, with cupcakes making up the lower tiers.

If you are looking for something really unusual, you may want to choose a fun contemporary cake. You could ask your wedding cake designer to design a cake that represents a hobby that you share with your partner, a sport that you both enjoy or a particular destination, such as the place that you first met or the place that you are going to on your honeymoon. You could even ask your wedding designer to create a “top table cake” based on your wedding and featuring figures of all the people sitting at the top table. Fun wedding cakes can be unique and provide a real talking-point, and you can really use your imagination when working with your cake designer to create one.

Wedding Cake Flavour

Flavour is one of the most important factors in creating the perfect wedding cake. Although rich fruit cakes are traditionally used for weddings, other cake flavours are becoming increasingly popular. You might decide that you would prefer a milk and dark chocolate cake or white chocolate cake, for example, and perhaps add strawberries or raspberries to the cake as decoration and to add flavour, or choose a flavoured sponge cake.

If you, your partner or a close family member have special dietary requirements, it’s also important to talk to your wedding cake designer about this, as he or she may be able to create a special cake for you. It’s now possible to buy dairy-free, gluten-free and wheat-free wedding cakes, so you can all enjoy eating it on your special day.
